The Brief

Playmakers approached NXT Interactive with the vision to create an immersive motion-controlled gaming experience that would engage audiences through physical interaction, energy, and fun. The concept revolved around an airport-themed runner game, where participants would physically control their avatar’s movement—mirroring their own actions on-screen—as they navigated obstacles and collected bonus items. The game also needed to inform users subtly about travel essentials, presented through an exciting, high-paced experience.

Our Solution

NXT Interactive developed Airport Runner, a motion-sensored 3D running game projected on a large-format landscape LED screen. Players stood in front of the screen, where a motion sensor tracked their movements in real time—allowing them to control their on-screen avatar by physically moving left or right.

Before the game began, users entered their details (name, phone number, and email) and selected a 3D male or female avatar. A short tutorial introduced them to the game mechanics—how to move, collect items, and avoid obstacles—ensuring every participant could jump right into the action.

Once the game started, players had one minute to collect as many bonus items as possible while avoiding obstacles scattered along the airport path. Each bonus or obstacle represented common travel items—symbolizing what to carry or avoid when traveling.

The goal: earn the highest score before the timer or the player’s three lives ran out.

Key Features

  1. Motion-Controlled Gameplay
Players used their body movements to steer the avatar across three lanes of airport pathways. Stepping right or left made the avatar move in the same direction, creating a highly engaging physical experience.

  2. Timed Challenge
Each game lasted 60 seconds, pushing players to maximize their score by collecting valuable items and staying alert to avoid obstacles.

  3. Bonus and Obstacle Items

  • Bonus Items (+ Points): Passport, boarding pass, travel pillow, sunglasses — essential travel items that increased the score.

  • Obstacle Items (- Points): Open suitcases and trolleys reduced points and cost players one life upon collision. Losing all three lives or running out of time ended the game.

  1. Scoring and Leaderboard
The player’s final score was determined by the total points earned from bonus items minus any penalties from obstacles. The leaderboard displayed top scorers in real time, encouraging friendly competition among participants.

  2. Visual Design and Immersion
Set inside a beautifully rendered 3D airport environment, the game featured dynamic lighting, uplifting animations upon gaining points, and authentic ambient sounds, making players feel as though they were truly racing through a terminal.

Event Setup

The installation featured:

  • A large landscape LED screen for immersive gameplay display.

  • Motion sensors positioned to track full-body movements with high accuracy.

  • Leaderboard display integrated into the game interface.

The setup was designed to handle continuous play throughout high-traffic event days, ensuring smooth performance and easy participant flow.

Outcome

The Airport Runner delivered a captivating, high-energy experience that combined physical interaction, gamification, and brand storytelling.

Participants were drawn in by the visual appeal of the LED display and stayed for the competitive thrill of improving their scores. The activation proved to be a crowd favorite, drawing consistent engagement and creating memorable moments that reflected Playmakers’ commitment to innovative, interactive experiences that bridge technology and play.
